The first question any great acting school asks is whether you want to be famous. It matters, because a life chasing fame is a life of commerce, and it measures success very differently from a life focused on craft.

Penelope is for those focused on craft. Acting might be the most beautiful, meaningful thing a person can do. You expose your soul and live inside another world for a while, all to piece together the confusing parts of life. And in understanding the world a little more, you understand yourself.

Unfortunately, the system isn't designed for craft. Most of what gets made at the big studios runs on commerce, rewarding the people who figured out how to play the game and played it really well. Unless you're born into the industry or can buy your way in, making a living as an actor is basically a lottery ticket.

Maybe we're delusional, but we just don't accept that this is the only way to be an artist. Maybe we're wrong to bet on craft. But we dream of a world where your work can speak for itself, so we're building a new ecosystem from scratch.

Call it a pipe dream, but one day we want to open our own film studio that hires from the Penelope community, and build a job platform that actually works for artists who care about craft. To get there, we're starting at the roots. Our first product is a self-tape and line memorization app, with a community of readers. From there, we hope to grow into a giant sequoia: a whole new ecosystem for artists focused on craft.
